NTT DoCoMo ending 2G cell service in 2012

There's nothing too crazy or unexpected about the news that Japanese wireless carrier NTT DoCoMo says that they're going to stop offering 2G cellphone service by the year 2012, except that if it's going to take the Japanese eight years to make the full transition to 3G, how long is it gonna take us poor suckers here in the States?
