Audio insectry: the worm-powered synth
If you thought the hamster-powered MIDI controller was a little off, peep its strange nematode cousin: the worm synth. We don't have the first idea why, but Baltimore-based circuit geek Peter Blasser built this synth with a patchbay controlled by live worms. As the slimy musicians crawl about the contact pins, they modify the circuits inside the synth, producing different sounds. Peter says the worms enjoy the electrical stimulation, and we're not about to ask him how he knows. If you want to treat your own squirmy pets to some self-inflicted audio tactilism you're in luck — Peter sells "worm-compatible" synth kits. Wind chimes are so last week — install one of these in your compost pile and be the talk of the town. For real.
