Sprint's version of Samsung's IP-A790 reviewed
The Verizon version of Samsung's
IP-A790 has been out for a while now, but was more recently also picked up by Sprint. PC Mag has a review of the Sprint version, which they find a better deal than the Verizon because it's an open phone — you can put a foreign SIM card in it and save loads on local calling rates. If you've got the A790 on Verizon, you're locked into using Vodafone's service when traveling overseas, which means you use your U.S. phone number and pay steep rates (approaching
$2 per minute in Europe, e.g.). Other quirks they found include a notably blue cast to shots from the phone's camera,
an awkward keyboard, and perhaps the biggest drawback as compared to the Verizon version: text messaging won't work in GSM mode. Still, battery life was quite good (almost five hours using CDMA, and likely adding a couple of hours to that figure for GSM usage), and the unlocked nature of the phone makes it a great choice for international travelers.
