Judge holds teen's Playstation during probation

A Manitoba 14-year-old convicted of two counts of assault and theft under $5,000 is receiving an unusual punishment:
on top of the more routine counselling he'll receive, his
PlayStation is being held hostage by the judge. The unit will be turned over to the court by May 15 and returned to the kid by September only if the judge feels he is progressing in counselling. It's a bit odd that the device receives no designation in the press other than
"PlayStation" — is it the PSP?
PS2? Ahhh screw it, the point is, no fun allowed on probation, kids. At least in Manitoba. Can this really be legal?
