Windows Mobile 5.0 keynote roundup

In case anyone didn't want to watch the
Windows Mobile 5.0 keynote yesterday and sit through Microsoft PMs run off at the mouth about their implementation of SQL Mobile and whipping up some quick C# apps for a device, we'll give you the Engadget skinny on what's going down that wasn't immediately apparent in yesterday's quick hits:

  • In addition to the HTC Universal (aka MDA IV) ,
the Samsung i300 will also run Windows Mobile 5.0—they demoed the music interface, which uses predictive text to
help select tracks (right). Pretty impressive!

  • They've added driver-centric device support so new radios and technologies can be supported easily without major
    OS upgrades

  • Support for near-field communications, 3G, and VoIP (they weren't too specific about these initiatives), and
    improved WiFi and Bluetooth support

  • Integrated voice command capabilities (they didn't specify whether this was speaker-independent voice
    recognition)

  • Additional integrated video conferencing support

  • Revamped Outlook mobile support with deeper support for desktop Outlook, and plans for push email support (due
with Exchange Server Titanium, which we already knew)

  • Excel Mobile will be able to view and create spreadsheets

  • Word Mobile will support tables, lists, and embedded images among other things

  • Powerpoint mobile will have a more or less fully functional presentation review mode

  • Support for 10 new languages
