DIYParts.org: don't throw away that old PC
We always have the best of intentions to repurpose our old gear, but let's face it — that Red Hat install disk has been sitting on top of the old 486 for months years now. The more noble thing to do would be to give the stuff away, if only we knew which of the freckle-faced 13-year-olds down the street could whoop our asses in a command line showdown any day. DIYParts.org is a new project designed to match up pairs just like us, with the additional goal of getting old and unused computer parts to areas of the developing world. The next phase of the project will be to add localizations all the way down to the neighborhood level, to get around the ubiquitous problem of expensive shipping costs that could often exceed the value of the items themselves. Sounds like a worthy cause —
capitalistas, if you can't Reduce, at least you can still Reuse and Recycle.
