SD cards live to tell the tale of balloon's crash

Ok, SanDisk, we know you're feeling pretty pumped up about your storage media's
reputation for surviving disaster, so simmah down already, aight? This time, a student research project at the University of California at Santa Cruz went awry when the research balloon they set aloft crashed into the Pacific Ocean. However, some of the debris that washed ashore included a couple of SanDisk SD cards, one of which was recoverable right off the bat, the other of which was saved by a researcher at SanDisk's engineering lab. Data was recovered, the project ended up a success, and the university gave the students a brace of prestigious awards — if only every
data disaster story ended so well.
