Cellphone service resumed in NYC commuter tunnels

Finally, after close to two weeks of disallowing cellphone service in two of New York's four busy commuter tunnels, the Port Authority has restored wireless service to the Lincoln and Holland tunnels. Service to the Midtown and Battery tunnels had also been shut down, but was apparently the
result of a miscommunication and was restored four days later. Neither the Port Authority nor the Metropolitan Transportation Authority have given definitive reasons for stopping phone service in the tunnels, but spokespersons have indicated the shutdown was a result of security concerns following the London bombings earlier this month.
